Mr Sayed Hassen is an experienced general and upper GI surgeon having been a consultant surgeon for more than 20 years and is currently the Director of Surgery at Eastern Health. He trained in the UK and Australia and did his fellowship in Sydney.
He has been heavily involved in the College of Surgeons and has been the Victorian Chair of the Board in General Surgery and is currently the Deputy Chair of the Federal Board in General Surgery. He has convened for the General Surgical Chapter of the ASC conference in Hong Kong in 2008 and was the scientific convener for the ASC in Singapore 2014.
Mr Hassen’s main area of interest is an upper gastrointestinal malignancy and he chairs the MDT in this area within Eastern health. He performs open, laparoscopic and endoscopic general and upper gastrointestinal surgery. His other main area of interest is jaundice and he performs ERCP for both benign and malignant conditions affecting the biliary tree.

Benign and malignant conditions of the upper gastrointestinal tract including reflux disease, hiatus hernia, achalasia and gastric and oesophageal cancers by open and laparoscopic techniques.
Pancreatic malignancies and splenic disorders.• Palliative treatment of malignancies including endoscopic stenting.
Surgical causes of jaundice requiring investigations and treatment such as gallstones and palliative stenting by ERCP.
Laparoscopic and open inguinal and incisional herniae repair.
