As of the 1st of February 2018, codeine-containing medications will be prescription-only, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has declared (1).

The decision has been driven by the serious risks associated with taking over-the-counter medicines with codeine as an active ingredient. Increased tolerance and strong withdrawal symptoms can lead to codeine addiction, posing serious long-term health risks (2).

Dr Michael Gannon from the Australian Medical Association has stated that deaths and illness from codeine use have increased in Australia and is encouraging patients with chronic pain to avoid self-treating and seek appropriate advice from their Doctors on medicines and non-medicine treatments (3).
