Good vision is important for proper hand-eye coordination during sports activities. Sometimes glasses are impractical for certain sports. Soft contact lenses are ideally suited for active children and will not fall out during sporting activities.

Contact lenses can usually be considered once the child is responsible enough to take care of their contact lenses (this involves removing them at night, proper cleaning and storage). Most kids are ready to take on this responsibility in their early teens, but every child is different. The youngest child I've fitted with contact lenses was 9 years old, and I've heard  of colleagues that have fitted younger than that.
