What age should eye checks start?

When should my children go for their first eye exam at an optometrist? My youngest is 3. Is that too young?

Three years old is definitely not too young for an eye check!  At that age, we use simple and short tests designed for the child's age and attention span.  Often the children find these tests to be fun.

I would recommend that all children have their eyes checked before they begin school, whether they have symptoms or not.  Certainly any child with a family history of eye problems, particularly lazy or turned eyes, should have their eyes examined no matter their age.
