The risk for contracting hepatitis can be reduced depending on what type of hepatitis.

Alcoholic hepatitis - Stick to the NHMRC recommendations to reduce your risk (no more than 2 standard drinks per day for men or women).

Hepatitis A - Get vaccinated. Wash hands after going to the toilet and before preparing food. Avoid contaminated food or water (take care when travelling in developing countries). Anal sex involves transmission risk so wash hands afterwards. Sexual partners and household contacts can have immunoglobulin injection which provides immediate short-term protection.

Hepatitis B - Get vaccinated. Avoid blood-to-blood contact. Practice safer sex with casual partners. Injecting, tattooing and piercing should be done under sterile conditions with single-use equipment. Avoid medical procedures in developing countries.

Hepatitis C - Avoid blood-to-blood contact. Injecting, tattooing and piercing should be done under sterile conditions with single-use equipment.
