Smoking has been shown to increase a persons chances of developing Crohn's, make their Crohn's have a more severe course, make them respond less well to medical therapy, increase the need for surgery and increase the rate of recurrence of Crohn's after surgery.
The story for alcohol is less clear but often patients report feeling unwell if they drink to excess but there are no firm recommendation to avoid alcohol such as there are for smoking.
Encourage your friends to smoke outside away from you if they must.
