Sad and confused

Wow. I just heard news that an old school friend of mine, aged 32 has just had surgery to remove early stage bowel cancer. How is it possible that someone so young can get so sick?? I think many young people are lulled into a false sense of security with regards to their health but the reality is we all need to start looking after ourselves right now! so with this in mind, I'm very interested to learn about how to prevent bowel cancer. is it prevenatble or is it genetic? Should I be avoiding certain foods and eating more of others? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Carol,

Thank you for your post and questions.

It is very true that we all need to start being aware of symptoms to look out for, risk factors and prevention when it comes to bowel cancer awareness and looking after our health.

It is difficult to understand how someone so young can develop such a disease, but unfortunately bowel cancer is increasingly affecting all age groups, including younger people.

For further information on bowel cancer risk factors and prevention, please have a read through the information of the following pages on the Bowel Cancer Australia website -

    ·         Bowel Cancer: Prevention·         Bowel Cancer: Risk Pathway·         Bowel Cancer : Screening Pathway

You may also be interested in the various publications we have available, in particular the Bowel Cancer: Prevent & Detect – Your Guide and Bowel Cancer: Screening – Your Choices booklets.

We hope this information helps you, and also all those reading this forum and discussion, and that everyone spreads the word to their family/friends. Awareness of all of these areas is so important, because if bowel cancer is detected early enough, it could just save your/their life.

    Thanks again.

    Kind regards

    Tammy
