Connecting with others about bowel cancer

Conversation started by kelliesara

I joined here to connect with people about bowel cancer.   My mum died of it this year, we lost her quite suddenly.  Its hard having no one to talk about it really.  I wish there was something like this available when she was sick.  Still trying to make sense of it and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar situation.   thanks

    Hi Kellie,

Thanks so much for your post; you have definitely come through to the right place.

So very sorry to hear about your Mum, what a sad time this must be for you and your family.

Talking to people who have been/or are going through a similar situation to yours, can be enormously valuable and reassuring.

The community on Healthshare is a really great way to connect. And if you haven’t recently, you may be interested in having a read about Bowel Cancer Australia's Love My Family Community too.

As well as bowel cancer patients, and people who have family/friends undergoing treatment for bowel cancer at the moment, we do also have quite a number of LMF Community members in a similar situation to you – who have lost a close family member to bowel cancer.

Wishing you a very warm welcome to the bowel cancer community on Healthshare, and we look forward to hearing more about your experiences.

    Kind Regards,

The team at Bowel Cancer Australia

    • Hi Kellie,

Thank you for joining Healthshare and sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother to bowel cancer. We also have a community where you can connect and share with others who have lost loved ones. We hope you find the support you need from others who have been there and understand what you are going through.

Let me know if you need any help in Healthshare navigating yourself around.

      Kind regards,

      Nicky

      • Thank you very much for your reply Nicky and the information about your bereavement community.  whilst I'm sure this is a valuable resource, i think the most applicable link for me at the present time is BCA.  I have family and friends who have helped me with my grief and have people I can talk to about that.   I feel like I need to learn more about bowel cancer and I am not sure why yet, but I guess I am so saddened that this illness took her life right in front of everyone;s eyes.     No-one told her to go to the doctors, I live in a different country i feel like I failed her as a daughter (who is also a healthcare worker).    If there was more awareness, the outcome might have been different.  I cannot believe this happened to her.   I want to do something,  but I am not quite sure what that should be.

    • Thank you for your response, I follow BCA on facebook and have tried to access the LMF community but I think I stumbled filling in the form previously, it didn't seem applicable to me. Anyway, I have resent another expression of interest.

      Thank you, Kellie

        Hi Kellie,

        Thank you for your message.

The Love My Family registration is available to ALL Australians who have been affected by bowel cancer - be it personally, having a loved one with bowel cancer, or even a friend with bowel cancer.

Too often we speak to people feeling alone & isolated, feeling they are the only ones going through this. So we really want to open up all lines of communication in helping people to connect with others who know what they are going through.

If you haven't already, you may be interested to have a read through the Real Life Stories and Real Life Story videos  on the Bowel Cancer Australia website.

By people writing to tell us their story and how bowel cancer has affected them, either directly or as a supportive loved one, it can really help others currently going through a similar situation.

Many of the Real Life Story participants have been brought together through the Love My Family Community.

We have received your Love My Family request, thank you very much, and will be in touch shortly with a registration pack.

Further details on the Community is available on the Love My Family Community page on the Bowel Cancer Australia website.

Thank you again for sharing your and your Mum’s story, thinking of you and your family at this sad time.

        Keep in Touch.

        Kind regards

        Tammy
