I have been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.
Conversation started by narelleHi, I have been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. I had no symptoms, only a week before my operation I had server stomach cramps & vomiting. A large tumour was removed plus part of small & large bowel, 7 lymph nodes were involved & tumour had seeded into sack around bowel. Very shocked that it had spread so far with no symptoms!! I've had a lot of trouble with diarrhoea for the past 9 weeks, explaining it to my surgeon & he put me onto Questran Lite which stopped it straight away! 1 to 2 sachets keeps it under control, I feel half normal again. Hope this info can help someone.
I've just had my second round of chemo & avastin through my portacath in my chest & take Xeloda tables for 2 weeks after then have a week off. Very tired on my week off. Overall going OK.

Hey Narelle,
I also have colorectal cancer, my exact stage is somewhere between 1 and 3 because my clinical and pathological staging yielded different results (the tumour was downgraded following surgery, most likely a result of the pre-op chemoradiotherapy I had).
We're similar in that our tumours left the inner lining of the bowel and invaded outside. Mine invaded from the sigmoid to the rectum and into my right vas deferens.
You mention that you have Stage 4 but you don't mention any mets?

Bowel Cancer Australia works to reduce the impact of bowel cancer in our society through awareness, education, support and research. We aim to help save ... View profileHi Narelle,
Thank you for your post regarding your recent diagnosis and for sharing some of your own bowel cancer experiences.
We truly do appreciate the feedback so many bowel cancer patients provide on Healthshare, offering support, and helping others to find solutions to problems and questions they too are dealing with.
Your feedback about Questran Lite is very helpful. Quite often we are asked what the best product on the market is to assist with different problems people experience throughout their bowel cancer journey, and it’s always valuable to hear feedback about different options.
Something you might also find to be helpful - it is good to take a probiotic when diarrhoea is present. It helps to settle the bowel and can sometimes prevent further episodes. An easy brand to purchase is Inner Health, taken one capsule three times a day before food.
Please do let us know if we can ever assist by offering advice, or help by answering any questions you have.
If you do have any queries or concerns - please feel free to contact us at Bowel Cancer Australia for advice from our nurse and nutritionist advisory services, or if you would like more information on joining our Love My Family Community, in helping spread the word about bowel cancer and / or if you would like to be put in contact with other patients in a similar situation.
Sending you our best wishes.
Kind regards
Tammy & Teresa
